Toyota Nigeria Limited (TNL) has introduced a new generation Camry, another masterpiece from the stable of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) Japan, into the Nigerian market.
While formally unveiling the new Toyota Camry model, during its recent press lunch in Lagos, the Managing Director, TNL, Mr Kunle Ade Ojo, who noted that the Camry model was first introduced in 1982, said as of 2015, “over 18 million units of this delectable model have been sold across regions.”
Ade-Ojo, speaking through the TNL’s General Manager, Corporate Services, Mr Bunmi Onafowokan, who represented him at the programme, said: “The car is indeed a remarkable package of safety, comfort and performance in equal proportion.”
According to him, “the model we are unveiling has undergone a total transformation and transition, from a proven sedan to one that pushes the boundaries of technology. It is a model that has enjoyed a high level of goodwill and acceptance not only for the superior quality engineering behind it but also for its stunning beauty.”
He said, “it is no exaggeration that the rich history of this model already imbues it with outstanding attributes peculiar only to all its siblings in our model line-up.”
“From its upgraded, trendier exterior to its spacious interior design, the latest model of the Camry available in 2.5L and 3.5L engines will readily arouse in its lovers a driving pleasure unparalleled in its class.”
He observed that though the economic landscape of Nigeria has not been exactly clement, yet, he said it had not deterred the company, rather, he said “in fact, it has positively impacted on our creativity in responding to the demands of our dear customers all over Nigeria and we will continue to explore ways of keeping them satisfied and also uphold our culture of excellence.
Also, he expressed appreciation to TNL’s “committed dealers” and other patrons, who he said “deserve worthy commendation” for their “consistent support even in this challenging business climate to ensure that we maintain our leadership position and the success of the Toyota brand in the Nigerian market.”
The TNL’s Brand Manager, Mr Bayo Olawoyin, who gave details of the new Camry’s features and its selling points, said the new model was built in such a way that it offers the owners real value for their money.
Olawoyin listed some of the striking features in the new generation Camry to include back monitor with the pedestrian detector, intelligent clearance sonar rear cross traffic auto brake, adaptive front lighting system, rear electric sunshade, rear electric reclining seats, electronic parking brake.
He said the new Camry’s selling points are found in its leading fuel economy and driving performance, likewise in the high-quality ride, top-class safety performance, and segment-leading advanced human-machine interface.
For the interior, he said the vehicle had been redesigned to be roomier especially for the rear occupants to enhance the luxury feel of the vehicle, and the seats redesigned to increase comfort for all occupants.
“Camry’s newly developed direct shift 8-Speed automatic transmission improves acceleration from a stop, provides a smooth ride even at high speeds and helps enhance fuel efficiency.
“The three distinct available drive modes give you even more control. Sports mode indulges your spirited side with a sharper acceleration feel; Eco mode adjusts throttle input to maximise your efficiency. Normal mode blends fuel economy with performance. Thanks to this choice of drive modes, a perfectly tailored drive arrive with the push of a button,” Olawoyin said.
The new generation Camry, he said, also came with a rear seat which can be reclined at the touch of a button, reduced gap between windshield and roof to reduce wind noise, a hood silencer to keep engine noise out of the cabin, rear control panel allows power seat, power sunshade and AC adjustment from the rear cabin of the vehicle.

The vehicle, he said also offers a compelling choice of petrol engines, the all-new 2.5L Dynamic Force four-cylinder and a new 3.5L V6, each delivering a sophisticated blend of performance and efficiency.
According to the carmaker, “both engines utilise the D-4S direct-injection system, which selects the optimal injection method based on driving conditions to pack a powerful punch with enhanced fuel economy to boot.
“The new 2.5L engine has improved performance by approximately six per cent over that of the out-gone model,” and while talking about performance, Olawoyin said, “the new Camry’s high efficiency, high-powered next generation Dynamic Force Engine, powerful acceleration and new direct shift 8AT contribute to the car’s low fuel consumption.”
The car also came standard with an Advanced Airbag System with advanced dual-stage SRS driver and front passenger airbags, plus the front and rear side curtain airbags, which made it nine airbags in all to ensure a prime focus on owners’ safety.
The new generation Camry has an automatic braking system, which is applicable when the brake-hold switch is on and the transmission is engaged other than Park or Reverse, the brake is automatically applied, and according to the carmaker, it is good to note that “the electronic parking brake will automatically engage after three minutes if the car has not moved.”
