AKPABIO'S DEFECTION A BLESSING IN DISGUISE FOR PDP - CHIEF ESSIEN NDUESE

By Blessing Bature Abuja

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ) and former minister , Chief Nduese Essien has said that the defection of former governor of Akwa Ibom state and minority leader in the Senate , Godswill Akpabio from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress , APC has turned out to be a blessing as the move has further strengthened the party .

Speaking with select journalists in Abuja , the former member of house of reps stated that with Akpabio ’ s defection , the bond that existed between him and his successor was broken which has helped governor Emmanuel take key decisions without being hindered by his benefactor .

Essien who stated that people were misconstruing the strength of APC based on Akpabio ’ s defection disclosed that unknown to many , APC in Akwa Ibom was operating on a fragile platform because of various intrigues within its rank and Akpabio ’ s entry has further created more problems for the party and made the situation worse .

“ With his defection , he thinks he can make the impact he made while in PDP and he has made more pronouncements that are more damaging to the interest of the APC ” , he said .

The elder statesman recalled that Akpabio in one of his statements said that Governor Emmanuel’ s emergence was his greatest mistake and that PDP had not done anything in Akwa Ibom for 16 years . “ But who is PDP ? Is Akpabio not PDP ? Meaning he has not done anything in the state which is a serious contradiction to the propaganda he made to build a very high reputation” , he queried.

On Nigeria ’ s housing deficit , the former minister of housing said that Nigeria has not shown any serious commitment in developing her housing sector. He lamented the unwillingness to get necessary cooperation from civil servants and also the non - flexibility of the land use act which makes it difficult for private developers to access lands as factors mitigating against housing for all in the country.

He frowned at a situation where a ministry as big as Housing is attached with other ministries headed by one minister .

He said : “ Having being a minister in that ministry , I can tell you that no single individual can handle three ministries at once and succeed . Works ministry alone is large not to talk of power ” .

To address the issue of housing deficit in Nigeria , Essien advised the federal government to allow the private sector to build houses for people.

He condemned a situation where houses are used to keep ill - gotten money .
