CDGG-Africa Condemns Senator Akpabio's Assaults on Essien Udim Electoral Officer, INEC staff

Akpabio

Sensing the imminent defeat of his party the APC, in today's elections, the former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio is reported to have begun to physically assault the staff of INEC posted to officiate the elections in his Local Government Area,  Essien Udim, Akwa Ibom State in southern Nigeria.

Series of Citizens reports and intelligence flagged by our office and confirm by our Team Lead Dr Eric Mumo has shown that Akpabio stormed the INEC office in the Local Government Area in the company of over 300 soldiers and has personally assaulted the Electoral Officer and other INEC adhoc staff working in the Local Government. He also personally assaulted the chapter Chairman of the PDP and has ordered the assassination of his brother, Mr Prince Ukpong Akpabio, the Honourable Commissioner for trade and Investment, who is the agent of the PDP in the Local Government Area.

Reports from party agents and some of the INEC staff who have escaped the assault reaching us is that the violence started when the INEC Electoral Officer refused to accept result sheets and ballot papers brought by the senator from an unknown location.

At the time of this report, agents of the various Political parties and the INEC staff are not safe as they are being molested by the soldiers on the orders of the senator.

The Centre for Democracy and Good Governance strongly condemns this descent to violence which is tantamount to subverting the people's will expressed through a legal process.

We urge the Nigerian Army, the Police Authorities and the Amnesty office to take note of this development.

Signed
Prof. Bob Pharrell.
