ATTACK ON EKWEREMADU: THREAT TO NIGERIA’S UNITY, REPUTATION – A’IBOM SPEAKER

Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, has condemned the recent attack on the immediate past Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, in Nuremberg, Germany, saying “it is a threat to Nigeria’s unity and reputation.”

Rt. Hon. Bassey made this known on Wednesday shortly after a roundtable session of the Conference of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly, themed “Strengthening the Capacity of State Legislature for Effective Governance,” at the Intercontinental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Mr. Darlington Udobong, the Speaker described the act as “despicable, disgraceful, unpatriotic and the height of disrespect to a leader. It is a shameful assault that threatens our unity and reputation as a country.”

“Senator Ike Ekweremadu, we all know, has consistently projected and defended the cause of his people in floor of the Senate and in his written and personal engagements with the Presidency. So, it is saddening that the same Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who was billed to give a keynote address at the Second Igbo Annual Cultural Festival and Convention in Nuremberg, Germany, was attack and assaulted by some criminally minded sons of Nigeria on the grounds of his insensitive disposure to the insecurity and lack of development in the South-East and other parts of Nigeria,” the statement maintained.

He added that “The incident is uncivil, uncultured and very unfortunate. Nobody deserves to be demeaned under any circumstance and in whatever way. It is equally unfortunate that the attackers, in the guise of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), ended up exposing their unpatriotic tendencies and disregard for morals.”

Rt. Hon. Bassey further urged Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora to renew their vigour in the fight against disunity, disharmony, hate and social vices that have retarded Nigeria’s development and progress.
The Speaker of the 7th Akwa Ibom House of Assembly also commended Senator Ekweremadu’s high level of maturity, unshaken belief and commitment to a united, progressive, strong and prosperous Nigeria.
