LG ELECTION: ANIEKAN BASSEY CANVASSES FOR PEACE, UNITY IN URUAN

Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, Speaker AKHA

To strengthen the established zoning arrangement of political offices in Uruan Local Government Area, Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Aniekan Bassey, has called for peace and unity in the forthcoming local government council election.

The call came on Sunday in Uyo during a meeting of elders and stakeholders of the area organized by its Political Leader for ratification of the zoning arrangement.

The Speaker appealed for the sustenance of the age-long harmony and peaceful coexistence of the people of Uruan for the progress and development of the area.

In his opinion, “political offices must be zoned and rotated within the four political blocs of the area at all time for equity and stability. This must be done to maintain a balance and political inclusiveness. We must not allow personal interest to jeopardize and work against our peaceful coexistence and the existing zoning arrangement of political office, specifically the chairmanship. I appeal to our elders and stakeholders to play politics devoid of hatred as perceived rivalries could turn allies.”

"On the issue of selecting elders as decision makers, it must be made up 20 persons. Each zone must select five persons including a Ward Leader. As soon as that is done, we can sit down and zone the Chairmanship position to a zone that rightly deserves it without sentiment,” he said.

The Speaker, who expressed displeasure over the attack on him and media stunt done recently by certain persons, lauded the stakeholders for their show of love and solidarity, saying “maintaining peace and unity is a must task for everyone in the local government.”

Earlier on his remark, the host, Chief Ekpe-Atakpor, said the “interest of Uruan must be paramount and it must be protected at all time. Zoning and rotation of political positions in Uruan must be kept for peace and equity.”

The Zonal Leader of Northern Uruan, Engr. Offiong Akpabio, in his remarks, reminded the stakeholders of the stance of their forebears that was championed by Late Gen. Akan on zoning and rotation of political offices, saying “it was done for equity, fairness and justice.”

While disassociating himself from the recent communiqué issued by the Elders of the North-Central Uruan, he apologized for the disrespect made to the office of the Speaker of Akwa Ibom State.

Others who spoke at the meeting included Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Roads and other Infrastructure Maintenance Agency (AKROIMA), Prince Godwin Ntukudeh; Chairman of State Internal Revenue Board, Akparawa Okon Okon; Uruan Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Henry Isaiah, the Zonal Leader of Southern Uruan, Chief Augustine Effiong, party stalwarts threw their weight on the zoning arrangement and the proposed meeting by Engr. Offiong Usen.

The meeting had in attendance all the elders and political class in Uruan.
