Celebration greeted the city of Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on Monday over the emergence of Hon Akaniyene Tommey Ikott, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairmanship candidate.
With a landslide victory over his opponents, Hon Akaniyene
scored 270 out of 273 accredited votes in the party’s primary held on Monday at the Uyo Township Stadium.
He beat two other aspirants for the PDP’s ticket, including the Victor Bassey Henry, Monday Ette Johnny and Emmanuel Bassey Edoho with 2, 1 and 0 votes respectively, to win the primary.
Speaking briefly after the result was announced, Hon Akaniyene thanked the PDP Chairman, Obong Udo Ekpenyong, for the credible and transparent primary, despite being his first assignment since he was elected chairman of the party.
He also thanked the delegates for victory done him, and assured Eket people a renewed hope even as they will come out en mass to vote him as their chairman in the forthcoming elections.
Also speaking, Director General of Hope Alive Campaign Organisation, Chief S. A. Idim, expressed satisfaction over the peaceful conduct of the primary which he described as free and fare.
He enjoined other aspirants to put on the spirit of sportsmanship by accepting defeat and work together with Hon Akaniyene for the best interest of Eket and its environs.
Political stalwarts, stakeholders, ward executives, women leaders, and youth leaders were seen singing and chanting victory songs for Hon Akaniyene Tommey.
