Senate suspends plenary for budget oversight

The Senate yesterday adjourned plenary for two weeks to allow relevant committees embark on oversight visits of the various ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

The ‎committees are to ascertain the level of the implementation of the 2018 budget, the utilisation of the foreign loans taken so far, among others. The lawmakers are to reconvene on November 6.‎
Senators had last week resolved to embark on the oversight following the approval they gave to the $2.786 billion foreign loans.
Some senators had observed that the level of the implementation of previous loans should be ascertained, while the Senate advised the Executive arm to limit its borrowings.‎
Senate President Bukola Saraki said “committees‎ that are going to carry out the oversight should do that diligently. It’s only plenary session that is suspended, but other activities will go on.”‎
Meanwhile, Saraki announced a change in a committee leadership, saying Sen Danjuma La’ah (PDP, Kaduna) is now the chairman of the committee on poverty alleviation, while Sen Lawal Yahaya Gumau (APC, Bauchi) will now serve as the deputy chairman.
Gumau, who replaced late Sen Ali Wakili, was last week announced as the chairman of the poverty alleviation committee.
