As the 6th Akwa Ibom Assembly winds down in few days time, the Speaker, Onofiok Luke, has cautioned politicians in Akwa Ibom State not to heat up the polity nor divert the attention of the newly inaugurated Governor Udom Emmanuel from his completion agenda for Akwaibomites.
Luke who spoke on Thursday while receiving members of the Ukara Ibibio political group at the Assembly Complex in Uyo said it was too premature to bring issues about who takes over from another person in 2023 to the political arena, stressing that issues that would disturb the governor from concentrating in his service delivery to the people should not be brought to the fore.
According to him, “We should not allow the politics of who will become what in the next four years to distract the Governor. Don't distract us, help us to concentrate in service delivery to you".
Luke, who will be resuming as member representing Etinan/Nsit Ubium/Nsit Ibom Federal Constituency in June, said: "Our concern should be how we can deliver on the platform that God has given to us, and not what someone wants to become in the next four years.
"Let us not heat up the polity by thinking of what someone will become. Let us look at what we can do with the little God has given us here to better the living conditions of the people that have given us their mandate"
"We have never seen this kind of political love in the state, where a lot of people across the thirty one local government areas of the state would come and line up behind a political party and it was total victory".
Speaking further, he revealed that it would not augur well if people begin to distract their leader, making him to start thinking of repositioning himself and keeping his support base intact, instead of doing things that would better the lot of the people who elected him.
In his words: “As we go in to discharge our responsibilities, what should be paramount in our minds should be the Akwa Ibom project which is to support Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, our leader, to deliver on the the project which to me is about a healthy, prosperous, educated and united state under one leadership, and under one God ".
While presenting his address earlier, the President General of Ukara Ibibio and Vice Chairman of Uyo local government area, Ukai Udeme Emmanuel, endorsed Barr Luke as a champion of the Ibibio race, even as his group presented a Patron award to the Speaker.
