-Says Protest with Coffin and burning of police vehicle was meant to weep sentiments
The A’Ibom police command has debunked the story making rounds on social media that a commercial motorcyclist, popularly called “Okada” was killed by men of the Nigeria Police force on Monday in Eket Local Government Area of the state.
DSP Odiko McDon, the Police public relations officer confirmed this in an interview with iReporters news today.
Mcdon stated that no okada rider in Eket Local government was killed by men of the Nigeria Police Force, stating further that the police can only wield guns when they are attacked and not when they are implementing a non-violent law.
The PPRO emphasized that people are just going about believing every actions and stories orchestrated by people to weep sentiments in their favour, without asking pertinent questions like, who was killed, what is the name of the person killed, where was the person killed, where is the corpse of the person killed?
“Why will people go about making assertions just to smear the image of the police force without asking questions like, who was killed, what is the name of the person that was killed, where was the person killed, where is the corpse of the person killed?”
““Why will people just stay and want to smear the image of the police?” – He added.
He maintained that the police is a law enforcement agency, whose duty is to maintain law and order in the society and not a gladiatorial agency that incites violence in the society while implementing the law.
“Did the police shoot any gun? How can just to enforce the ban on bike, the police will go and use force?”
“It is only when the police is attacked that the police will be forced to retaliate” – He maintained.
The police spokesperson however noted that the protest undertaken by Okada riders in Eket this morning that led to the burning of police vehicle, was meant to weep sentiments for the partial ban on commercial motorcycle operations to be lifted.
He confirmed that 19 persons have been arrested in connection with the violent protest that led to the burning of a police vehicle, stressing that they will face the rhythm of the law, while urging law abiding citizens to go about their normal duties as the police will leave no space for miscreants to hijack the peaceful nature of the state to perfect their schemes.
