DR. AKPANUSOH SEEKS GOVERNMENT COLLABORATION TO END ATTACKS, KILLINGS OF FISHERMEN BY SEA PIRATES

The Member Representing Esit Eket/Ibeno State Constituency, Dr. Usoro Akpanusoh, has called on government at all levels to collaborate with relavant stakeholders for the purpose of finding lasting solutions to incessant attacks and killings of Akwa Ibom Fishermen by sea pirates.



Dr. Akpanusoh, who said before him are several petitions and complaints of attacks and killings of fishermen by sea pirates and militants in our territorial waters,  noted that the issue of territorial security and combating of militancy are huge concern which must be tackled by everyone in order to protect and gaurrantee the Safety of lives of Akwa Ibomites who are into fishing business.


Akpanusoh raised the alarm while recieving the leadership of Ibom Seafoods Producers Multi-purpose Co-operative Union Limited (ISPMPCUL), in a courtesy visit on him Today, at his office in Uyo.

Dr. Akpanusoh, who is equally the Chairman, House of Assembly Committee on Rural Development and Public Utilities, cautioned that the issue of Piracy attacks on indegens of the State who goes about in doing their bussineses as fishermen must be given serious attention in collaboration with the security agencies.

National President of (ISPMPCUL), Deacon Francis Joseph Ekpeyong, who was accompanied by the Union's Vice President, Dr. Edem Umoren and the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Monday, commended the five star lawmaker's significant performance and steering legislative leadership as witnessed within and outside the State.


Mr. Francis, in his speech lamented over government negligence of fishermen Safety in the territorial waters of the State. He reeled out some of the objectives of the Union to include; promotion of territorial unity and protection of lives and properties of all fishermen in Akwa Ibom State. He maintained that incessant killings and attacks by sea pirates from neighboring states have become one of the major challenges faced by the Union, while appealing to the Udom Emmanuel led-administration to accommodate the interest of Fishermen in his completion.

Akpanusoh in his response to complaints submitted by the National President of  (ISPMPCUL), charged Local Government Chairmen in their respective LGAs to step up their security mechanism.
"There are certain issues that should have been sorted out and lasting solutions reached through the efforts of LGAs chairmen which, as  the third tier of government that brings governance closer to the people at the grassroots should be having security meetings with relevant stakeholders including village heads and Youth presidents across the wards in their LGAs. This approach if applied would enable them to ascertain true identities of those who are coming in to their LGA to do business of any kind". Akpanusoh advised.

The Lawmaker however expressed confidence in the Leadership of Governor Udom Emmanuel, stating that the issue of attacks, humiliation and killings of fishermen by sea  pirates and gerndarms Officers will soon be a thing of history.

He encouraged the Union's leadership not to be dettered by the challenges faced but, should rather remain united in their course of business while assuring them of a lasting solutions underway.

"We have a listening Governor who we are certain will take proactive steps to put an end to this criminal activities which have cost our people so much pains" he assured.

Akpanusoh, however promise to include Security agencies in his next empowerment program by providing them with a speedboat and outboat engine that will aide them in their surveillance and monitoring of all illegal activities of sea pirates and militancy in our territorial waters.

Also listed as part of the Union's appeal to the State government is the Reactivation of the defunct fishing Industry Terminal at Ebughu in Mbo LGA, appointment as Special Adviser on Seafoods Matters to supervise the Affairs of the said body, provision of  boats, fishing nets etc. This he said will add value the vision of Dakkada philosophy and boost economy of the State and as well create employment for teaming youths.
