EPU CAUTIONS ON ONGOING VANDALISM

Following the unnecessary but wanton destruction of public assets and looting of private concerns that replaced the commendable peaceful protests across parts of the country, Ekid People's Union (EPU) hereby cuations its citizens, particularly the youths, to resist any attept to lure them into joining the unholy acts.

We are also to remain alert, cautious and willing to ward off any suspicious move to destroy the needed assets situated  within our domain.

EPU strongly condemns the ongoing vandalism, looting and arson ravaging the nation and Akwa Ibom, in particular. There is absolutely no plausible reason to hijack a legally guaranteed peaceful protest, aside from criminal intents.

We should note that destroying public properties and looting of products of private efforts will not solve our current social and economic downturn. Instead such dirty acts will only draw us backwards on the pedestal of development and social progression.

EPU commends Gov Udom Emmanuel for promptly taking action to arrest the ugly situation by declaring a curfew. He should do everything possible, in concert with the relevant security agencies, to bring the culprits to book.

The current situation however, requires more than government actions. Leaders at all levels - political, religious, traditional and even youths - should be involved in sensitising, advising, motivating our  young ones to be positive thinking, eschew violence and embrace peace, peaceful coexistence and productive endeavours.

EPU lends it voice to the recent unwarranted shooting at defenceless, peaceful and unarmed youths who were involved in the #EndSARS protest at the Lekki Toll Gate Plaza in Lagos.

We also joins well-meaning Nigerians and even outsiders to urge the Federal Government to take tangible, visible and convincing steps to arrest the deplorable socio-economic situations that led to the recent public protests.

 - Chief Usoro I Usoro, Ph.D ( Publicity Secretary)
