The Akwa Ibom State Ethical and Attitudinal Reorientation Commission, EARCOM, have again charged citizens and residents in Akwa IbomState to be vigilant as the third wave of Covid-19 rages.
Executive Chairman of the Commission, Dr Dorothy Thompson made the call for caution and vigilance in Uyo, while interacting with newsmen on the rampaging Delta variant of the virus which has infected many persons already in the State.
Dr Thompson stressed that, whereas His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel had put in place proactive measures to curb the spread of the virus, including the building of a world class Isolation Centre at Ituk Mbang and setting up the Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem led Akwa Ibom State COVID-19 Management Committee, the people must take responsibility and be alert in observation of the various protocols put in place to contain and prevent the spread of the virus.
She expressed worry that, as disclosed by the Covid-19 Management Committee, cases of covid-19 within the state have risen from five (5) to one hundred and fifty six (156) in the last twoweeks.
The EARCOM boss said the Commission totally aligns with the declarationby the Committee that, this increase, when considered in the light of the new Delta variant of the virus, which has now been isolated in Nigeria, calls for a renewal of our collective effort at preventing the spread of Covid-19 virus infection in Akwa Ibom State.
She therefore charged all citizens and residents of the state to obey all Covid-19 guidelines and protocols earlier enunciated by both the Government of the State and the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC), including, proper use face mask, regular washing of our hands with soap and clean running water, use of appropriate alcohol-based hand sanitizer, ensuring social distancing of not less than one meter at all times, avoiding overcrowded areas especially indoors and all non-essential social gatherings and shaking of hands.
Dr Thompson reminded all that, while sneezing, the elbow should be used to cover the mouth or a disposable tissue while ceremonies such as burials, weddings, birthday celebrations can be reconsidered for the time being.
While commending Governor Emmanuel and the Dr Ekuwem led Covid-19 Management Committee for remaining proactive in tackling the threat of the virus, Dr Thompson assured that EARCOM will intensify her public sensitization campaigns on the global pandemic as well as reinforce the fight against social vices like cultism, drug abuse, prostitution, trafficking in human persons, violence, examination malpractices, rape and all forms of criminality.
