Ekid People's Union (EPU) has acknowledged the recent display of commendable goodwill by the Chairman of Eket Local Government, Hon Frank Archibong, through a car gift to one of his predecessors. In a commendably emerging spirit of appreciating our deserving elders and honoring our heroes, Chairman Archibong donated a car to former chairman of Eket, Obong Samuel Atang, who presided over the local government between 1991 and 1993.
Though his tenure was relatively short, Obong Atang left a lot of impacts on the people and the local government - one if which was the recently demolished Eket Sport Stadium. The car gift is therefore a way of showing appreciation for the strong foundation the former chairman laid for the people, today's leaders and the future.
The gesture, quite in line with the thinking of EPU, has a way of not only uniting the older generation of leaders with the contemporary one but also has the potential of spuring future leaders to do more for the people.
When leaders have the hope that their good deeds may be rewarded by posterity, they may be less selfish in seeking to accommodate excessive wealth ostensibly as their out-of-office insurance.
EPU therefore commends Mr Archibong for his thoughtfulness, goodwill and magnanimity in appreciating Obong Atang. Similar gesture should, however, also be extended periodically to other deserving leaders, who have in diverse ways impacted on the people, as a way of encouraging others to do more.As a mouthpiece and conscience of Ekid nation, EPU is sure to commend the good deeds of our leaders and people, while in a similar vein drawing attention to any unsavoury aspect that may not improve the well-being of the people. In this case, Mr Archibong deserves our commendation.
